In the United States, we’re celebrating Independence Day tomorrow. It’s been 250 years since we declared our independence from England and launched one of history’s boldest experiments in freedom, self-government, and possibility.
But I think the founders wanted something even bigger than political independence.
In the preamble to the Declaration of Independence—that remarkable 1,320-word manifesto that essentially gave jolly old King George III the biggest American middle finger in history—they didn’t just argue against tyranny or taxation without representation.
They wrote these words:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Imagine that.
Not a guarantee of happiness.
Not a government-issued definition of happiness.
Just the radical idea that each of us has the right to pursue it.
On our own terms.
That’s Creative AF.
Because what fills your soul doesn’t have to fill mine.
One person finds joy building a business. Another finds it raising children. Someone else paints watercolors, restores old cars, quilts, gardens, writes poetry, volunteers at the animal shelter, or spends weekends wandering antique stores looking for forgotten treasures.
None of those pursuits require anyone else’s approval to be worthwhile.
If there isn’t a better argument for authenticity, I don’t know what is.
But here’s the thing.
Most of us are no longer imprisoned by kings.
We’re imprisoned by opinions.
We ask permission from people who were never given authority over our lives.
We shrink our dreams because someone laughed once.
We stop writing because someone called it unrealistic.
We stop painting because we don’t think we’re “good enough.”
We stop dancing because someone told us we had two left feet.
We stay in jobs that slowly drain us because they’re respectable.
We stay quiet because we’re afraid of becoming too much for someone else’s comfort.
That’s not freedom.
That’s simply a different kind of tyranny.
This Independence Day, maybe it’s time to declare independence again.
Declare your independence from the story that says you’re too old.
Declare your independence from the belief that you have to earn the right to be creative.
Declare your independence from perfectionism.
From comparison.
From the exhausting need to explain yourself.
From the idea that your life has to make sense to people who aren’t living it.
Because here’s the beautiful thing about creativity:
It isn’t just about making art.
Creativity is making a life.
It’s designing a career that fits who you are.
It’s starting the side business.
It’s planting the garden.
It’s learning to quilt at sixty-five.
It’s taking piano lessons at seventy.
It’s finally writing the book that’s been whispering your name for twenty years.
It’s saying yes to the trip.
No to the obligation.
Maybe to the dream.
Every creative act is, in its own small way, a declaration of independence.
It says:
“I refuse to let fear make my decisions.”
“I refuse to let someone else’s expectations become my identity.”
“I refuse to spend the only life I’ve been given waiting for permission.”
So while the fireworks light up the sky tomorrow, celebrate the country if that’s meaningful to you.
But celebrate something else, too.
Celebrate the fact that your life is still unwritten.
Celebrate that there are dreams you’ve yet to chase, stories you’ve yet to tell, people you’ve yet to become.
Celebrate your right to pursue happiness—not someone else’s version of it, but your own.
Wildly.
Authentically.
Creatively.
Because freedom isn’t just something a nation declares.
Sometimes it’s something a single person chooses.
Today could be your Declaration of Independence.
Stay sassy, loves.
And go make some damn magic.
